Mean Mummy

My very indignant 6-year-old has just stormed off in a huff after telling me and her Daddy that we're mean.

It's a snow day here in Birmingham. It started snowing yesterday and that started off an afternoon of singing "Do you want to build a snowman?" and sulking because there wasn't enough snow on the ground to make a snowman. (Admittedly, that was from both myself and Chloe.

We woke up this morning to find a lovely blanket of snow everywhere. Paul insists we have to eat breakfast and then we bundle up warm, make snow angels, have a snowball fight and build a snowman. Paul makes us lunch, we dry off and eat and start playing with Lego only to be asked when Santa is coming.

In her, admittedly very limited life experience, Chloe already associates snow with Christmas. There is snow, ergo it must be Christmas. I explain that Santa only comes at Christmas which is in December and it's only March. Insert a quick learning moment where we go over our months and realise December is a whole nine months away and that Santa isn't coming.

Chloe doesn't like this answer. She gets up and runs off and the next thing I hear is "Daddy, when's Santa coming?" Luckily, Paul heard my answer and tells her the same thing. Chloe was very unimpressed to hear this, shouts at us that we're mean and stomped upstairs.

I know we should be telling her off for shouting at us and waking Harry up from his afternoon nap, but honestly I'm too busy laughing!

2018

I'm not even going to think about how long it's been since I've posted anything here. To say that 2017 didn't quite go to plan would be a little bit of an understatement and everything that wasn't immediately important got pushed to one side and basically forgotten about. I'm finally feeling like I have time to sit down, breathe and take stock of everything that's happened in the last 7 or 8 months.

The cliffnotes version of it is:
  • My mum got diagnosed with breast cancer - but is in remission as of Christmas Eve
  • Paul & I got married in the summer.
  • We moved house, because of
  • We welcomed baby #2 into the world in November. A little boy called Harry.
Things, as you can imagine, have been a little hectic - but for the most part it's all been very positive and very exciting.

That brings me to today. I picked up my computer for the first time in 2 or 3 months, checked my emails, updated my goodreads and now here I am blogging. Paul is in his chair watching football, Chloe is taking up as much floor space as possible doing some colouring in, Harry is asleep on my chest and Taylor Swift is singing my ears. It's about as perfect as it can get right now.

I've been doing a lot of taking stock of my life, of figuring out who I am and who I want to be. I lost myself somewhere in all the chaos so my main goal for 2018 is to redefine who Tabby is. And hopefully you'll be joining on me on this journey of re-discovery

Looking up

My partner Paul and I have been together for 16 years - and we've known each other for 22 years. We've been talking about getting married for at least 10 years and really we've been engaged for 9, we have a house, we have a child. We just never quite seem to get around to the actual getting married

And yes, your sums are right there. I'm 30, I've know him since I was 8, we've been dating since I was 14 and we got engaged when I was 21. Our daughter was 4 in January. We have such a cliche love story at times but I still look at him and get butterflies!

I think maybe next year the actual getting married bit is going to happen. We've had engagement pictures, we've sent out save the date cards and I've started looking at dresses. We've talked to venues for the reception.

I guess it's true what they say about good things come to those who wait, and that it's worth the wait and... as many other similar sayings you can think of. But... I think I''m actually going to get my dream, fairytale, wedding!

We've been really lucky with Chloe. She's never been a picky eater - the complete opposite, in fact. That little girl will eat anything, especially if her Daddy has it. There was one memorable occassion when she was about 18 months old when she had a full on temper tantrum because we wouldn't let her have a pickled onion. Daddy had one, therefore Chloe had one. Sorry, sweetheart, but you were too young.

She does have phases where she only ever wants to eat one thing. They never last long and she always goes back to eating everything under the sun. We're currently going through a phase of pancakes. Yes, pancakes. They've been her favourite thing ever since Shrove Tuesday.

I asked her what she wants for dinner and she's very emphatic that she wants pancakes. Paul said something about bacon and her face just lit up.

As a result, dinner this evening is pancakes, bacon, scrambled eggs and maple syrup.

Sometimes I think my life is very peculiar!

It's cloudy and grey here in Birmingham, and I've got a rare Saturday afternoon off. We had a family lunch out, nothing exciting - just down the local pub, but it was nice to have the ability to take our time and enjoy spending time together.

We're now home. Chloe is stretched out on the living room floor playing with her lego. She really loves the Lego Friends sets that she's playing with the Horse Vet trailer. Two of her favourite things. Horses. Everything is about horses right now. And she wants to be a vet when she grows up.

Paul and I are watching The Originals on Netflix and he's giving me a heavenly foot rub. I'm sitting with my feet in his lap and he's laughing at me as I'm sitting here telling you about it. He's being very supportive of my attempts at this new hobby though he has no real interest in it himself.

Poppy the dog is asleep in her basket, but lookng at the clock I imagine dog, man and child will all soon start to demand food. We had a full meal earlier so I'm thinking something like cheese toasties and tomato soup; always a favourite on a chilly, lazy day

I don't actually know if I have anything in particular to say in this post but I thought I'd share a little snapshot of my afternoon

Happy Mothering Sunday to all the other mum's out there.

My little girl (and her daddy) made me breakfast in bed - Full English no less! - and a beautiful bouquet of flowers. I also got The Music Of Nashville S1 CD boxset and S1 of The Walking Dead on DVD. I feel very spoiled, very loved and I'm looking forward to curling up and watching that tonight after Chloe's gone to sleep.

Paul then said I could spend the day doing whatever I wanted. And honestly, I'm still sitting here in bed. I sprained my ankle yesterday afternoon at the gym so I'm sitting here with it on a pillow, listening to Sam Palladio singing to me and I've been reading The Vampire Lestat. Kind of perfect, really.

Oh my Gosh, I completely meant to post a proper introduction on Sunday but then my little girl got sick and things all went insanely busy at work and I've barely had time to sit down until right now. And here I am finally online again.

Hello, hello to everyone who's joined me on this crazy adventure! I'm not completely sure how to write an actual introduction despite having planned on doing so.

My name's Tabby, I'm 29 and I live in Birmingham, England, with my fiance Paul and our 4 year old daughter Chloe. Paul & I have known each other since we were 8 and started dating at age 14. One day we'll get married!
I'm a dance and fitness instructor. I'm also a complete water baby and keep thinking about looking into becoming a swimming instructor too.
I love country music.
I love urban fantasy and horror - especially vampires. I'm also a sucker for a good post-apocalupse/dystopia story.
I'm one of those people who will binge a whole series on Netflix, or sit up until 3am with a really good book.
I'm pretty outgoing, love people and I'm a sarcastic little bitch with a dark sense of humour. I'm pretty sure my mouth is going to be me in trouble one of these days.

Anything else anyone can think of that I should say in this introduction? Anything you're just dying to know about me?
